Key Responsibilities

The Principal Mechanical Engineer (PE) sits within the Data Center Solutions & Architecture organization supporting large-scale data center infrastructure. The Mechanical Engineer of Record (EOR) provides licensed professional engineering review and stamping authority for mechanical designs supporting mission-critical cooling infrastructure.

The role focuses on validating and certifying mechanical systems such as chilled water plants, cooling towers, pumping systems, and hydronic distribution networks to ensure designs meet applicable codes, regulatory requirements, and performance standards for high-density data center environments.

Mechanical Design Review & Certification

  • Review mechanical engineering packages for data center cooling infrastructure including chilled water plants, cooling towers, pumps, and piping distribution systems.
  • Provide professional engineering review and stamping of mechanical drawings and construction documentation.
  • Validate mechanical system calculations including flow rates, pump head, pressure drop, and thermal capacity.

System Performance & Compliance

  • Verify system designs meet applicable standards including ASHRAE guidelines, International Mechanical Code (IMC), and NFPA requirements.
  • Review plant redundancy strategies and system performance assumptions supporting mission-critical environments.
  • Ensure designs meet regulatory and permitting requirements.

Engineering Collaboration

  • Collaborate with internal engineering teams including mechanical, electrical, controls, and system architects to support design validation.
  • Support responses to AHJ review comments and engineering feedback during permitting or project review processes.
  • Participate in internal design reviews and quality assurance activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States.
  • 8+ years of experience in mechanical engineering supporting data centers, mission-critical infrastructure, or large-scale industrial cooling systems.
  • Experience reviewing chilled water systems, cooling towers, pumping systems, and hydronic distribution networks.
  • Experience reviewing piping systems, pump selections, hydraulic calculations, and mechanical system documentation.
  • Strong knowledge of ASHRAE standards, International Mechanical Code (IMC), and mechanical permitting requirements.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings including P&IDs, piping layouts, and equipment schedules.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multi-state PE licensure or NCEES Record for reciprocal licensing.
  • Experience supporting hyperscale or AI data center cooling infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with liquid cooling technologies such as direct-to-chip or immersion cooling.
  • Experience with engineering tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or plant design software.
